Halden Workshops

Programme no. 14
Autumn & winter term 2026

One-day courses in clay, wood & cloth

Make something slowly, and take it home.

Six hours at a long table in a quiet studio, eight people at most, with an artisan who teaches for a living. Lunch is on us. You leave with something you made and the know-how to make it again.

Hands smoothing a white clay pot on the wheel
Hands guiding white warp threads on a wooden loom
Handmade stoneware cups in cream and speckled glaze

This term

Three crafts, one day each.

i. Clay

Throw a pair of cups

Most people spend the first hour learning to centre. That is the whole secret, and by lunch it clicks. In the afternoon you throw, trim and handle two cups, then choose a glaze from three we mix in the studio.

We fire everything in our own kiln. Collect your cups two weeks later, or we post them.

ii. Wood

Carve a spoon from green wood

Green birch is soft enough to carve with a knife and an axe, and forgiving enough for a first attempt. We teach three safe grips, how to read the grain, and when to stop.

You leave with an oiled eating spoon, a rough second one, and the confidence to carve at home.

iii. Cloth

Weave a little wall hanging

On a simple frame loom you learn warping, plain weave, soumak and rya knots: enough to make texture with intent. Yarns are undyed wool, linen and a little naturally dyed silk.

The loom is yours to keep, so you can start the next one on the train home.

Questions

Do I need any experience?

None. Every workshop is written for complete beginners; people who have done it before still leave with something new.

What is included in the price?

All materials and tools, aprons, lunch and coffee, and for clay the glaze firing. Pieces that need firing can be posted for €9.

How many people are in a group?

Six to eight, with one tutor. Enough to be sociable, few enough that you get real help.

Can I cancel?

Up to 14 days before for a full refund. After that, you can move to another date once, free.

Is the studio accessible?

Ground floor and step-free from the street, with an accessible toilet. Tell us about anything else you need when you book.

Do you run private groups?

Yes, for six to eight people on weekdays. Ask for dates and we will send three options.

What this demo shows

  • One clear action, repeated where it is needed: every date links to the booking form.
  • In-page navigation that stays at the top while you scroll.
  • Booking form layout, switched off in this demo.

Every client site gets its own look, from the logo and photos you send. Nothing here is a template you would share with anyone else. See Page for the full scope, or all five demos.
